Our top three pit stops between DC and the Outer Banks!
It’s finally time to hit the road for your Corolla vacation! If you’ve got dogs or young ones in tow, finding a pit stop that works for everyone can be tricky. We’re sharing our favorite stops south of DC to help you minimize meltdowns and maintain everyone’s sanity.
Ashland, VA
Located just north of Richmond, this little town sits right off I-95 so you won’t waste a lot of time going out of your way. Since we’re usually passing through around breakfast time, we like that there’s a Wawa, Panera Bread, and Starbucks all within a few blocks of one another. There’s also Pufferbelly Park nearby, which features a small playground, skate park, and green space with picnic tables.
Kidsburg at Veterans Park in Williamsburg, VA
This 19-acre park has high ratings for good reason. It’s home to Kidsburg, a 30,000-square-foot lighted playground that features separate play areas for children ages 2–5 and 5–12, a ship replica, swing areas, and two zip lines. Other park amenities travelers will appreciate include a half-mile paved ADA-accessible multiuse trail, an off-leash dog area, decent bathroom facilities, and vending machines. Just down the road you’ll find Jersey Mike’s and CAVA, both of which offer online ordering to save you time.
Morris Farm Market in Maple, NC
Hooray! You’ve finally crossed the North Carolina state border and you’re getting closer to feeling that ocean breeze. You’re starting to notice a change in scenery that just makes it feel like your vacation is officially beginning. If you want to enter vacay mode, be sure to stop at Morris Farm Market. Trust us, this isn’t some rinkydink roadside stand, it’s an experience. From humble beginnings this has grown into a several hundred acre farm with plenty of parking for cars, trucks, RVs, and trailers. Countless OBX travelers enjoy the hot food, picnic areas, outdoor bar, food trucks, and open space to stretch their legs and walk their dogs. Guests can even enjoy live music with local, regional, and national recording artists.Â
